How to fix it

Intuit recommends 5 solutions for this problem. The first solution may solve your problem, or you may need to try all of them to resolve the issue. For best results, perform the solutions in the order shown.

Solution 1: The company file is located on external media:

  1. Copy the company file to a local hard drive or to the QuickBooks file server on a network.
  2. Open QuickBooks and open the company file.

Solution 2: The computer opening the company file is using a mapped drive letter instead of UNC:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Choose File > Open or Restore Company (in QuickBooks 2006, choose File >Open Company).
  3. (QuickBooks 2007 and later versions only) Select Open a company file and click Next.
  4. In the left pane of the Open a Company window, click My Network Places.
  5. Double-click Entire Network and navigate to the location on your server where the company file is stored.
  6. Select the company file and click Open.

Solution 3: BitDefender software may be blocking communication between computers on a network:

  1. Temporarily disable or uninstall BitDefender software on the computer hosting the company file and on the computer trying to access the company file.
  2. Open QuickBooks and open the company file. If the file opens successfully, refer to BitDefender documentation or technical support to configure access to the following ports as appropriate to your version:
    • QuickBooks 2012: Ports 80, 8019, 56722, and 55348 through 55352
    • QuickBooks 2011: Ports 80, 8019, 56721, and 55343 through 55347
    • QuickBooks 2010: Ports 80, 8019, 56720, and 55338 through 55342
    • QuickBooks 2009: Ports 80, 8019, 56719, and 55333 through 55337
    • QuickBooks 2008: Port 10180
    • QuickBooks 2007: Port 10172
    • QuickBooks 2006: Port 10160

Solution 4: The permission settings are incorrect for the folder hosting the company data file:

Solution 5: The folder containing the company data may be damaged:

  1. Create a New Folder on your C:\ drive.
  2. Copy/Paste the Company File to this newly created folder.
  3. Refer to Solution 4 above to set up the correct permissions for the folder.
  4. Using QuickBooks, try to open the Company File from this new location
