Error 1328 - How to resolve

Error 1328 occurs when the installer encounters a file of a different version than it expects.

This error can happen during the repair process, as well as other times when installing, updating, or uninstalling any version of QuickBooks, not just Enterprise. Most of the time this error is harmless and if "Ignore" is continually selected, the process will complete successfully.

The message received usually refers to a specific file. The error looks something like: c:\config.msi\PT**.TMP. The file name in the error message may not be the same as shown here, but the C:\config.msi\ path will be the same.

While this may seem repetitive, there are actually two possible situations to resolve shown here. The difference is the way the Error 1328 presents itself with the option buttons.

Situation 1:

If the Error 1328 contains the buttons Abort, Retry, and Ignore the first step is to rename the config.msi folder on the computer. Temporary (.tmp) files in the config.msi folder prevent QuickBooks from finishing the process it is using.

The config.msi folder is a temporary repository for storing scripts needed to roll back an installation if it fails. Once the program installs correctly, the contents of this folder are deleted. Sometimes they are unable to be removed, so they become stuck. Once they are stuck, they can cause problems with QuickBooks repairing or updating itself.

To locate the config..msi file, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Windows Explorer (right-click on the Start button and select Explore)
  2. Double-click on the C: drive
  3. Show hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > Select View tab >Hidden files and folders > select Show hidden files and folders > Click Apply and OK)
  4. Show protected operating system files (Tools > Folder Options > Select View tab > Deselect Hide protected operating system files > Click Apply and OK)
  5. Right-click config.msi and select Rename
  6. Add .old to the end of the filename and press Enter (the filename should now be Config.msi.old)
  7. Hide protected operating system files and hidden files and folders again (following Step 3 and 4 above, but hiding, instead of showing)

Now update, repair, uninstall, or install should complete without error. I would suggest that if you are not familiar with computers, you may want to consult a computer technician to assist you with these steps.

Once the rename has been completed, try to repair QuickBooks again. If you receive the error again, click the Ignore button as many times as it comes up to complete the process.

Situation 2:

If the Error 1328 appears with only the Retry or Cancel buttons, select to Retry one time. If this does not allow the process to continue click Cancel.

If you canceled the process, follow the steps to try to resolve the issue. The first steps may solve your problem, or you may need to try all three to resolve the issue. For best results, try the steps in the order.
Important: These troubleshooting steps may help resolve your issue. They focus on the Windows operating system.

As stated before, if you are not comfortable doing these steps on your own, you can find expert assistance by consulting your computer's manufacturer or a Windows expert. If the difficulty persists after performing these steps, contact your computer's manufacturer or Microsoft.

A. Repair QuickBooks

After the Repair process is complete, restart your computer and then open QuickBooks. If you still encounter the problem, go through the next steps.

B. Reinstall QuickBooks

With this step I would recommend downloading the program from the Internet. I suggest this because the download will have all of the current updates for your program. This would mean you would install once and have all of the updates completed. Please follow the link to download your version.

C. Rename the config.msi folder

Follow the steps given above  for this function.
